GRANDMA'S CHALLAH


INGREDIENTS:

¼ cup plus 1¼ cup (just luke warm) water
1 tablespoons dry yeast
¼ cup sugar
3 eggs beaten
2 tble sp vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
4 to 4½ cups Plain, All purpose flour
1 tble sp poppy or sesame seeds

METHOD:

1. Dissolve yeast and sugar in 1/4 cup of warm water
2. let it stand for 5 mins
3. mix flour and salt together
4. make a well in the centre of the flour
5. add 2/3 of the egg, oil yest mixture and remaining water
6. mix together well (warm hands are preferable)
7. knead the dough on a floured board
8. add flour little by little until dough is smooth and elastic
9. place dough into a lightly oiled bowl
10. cover bowl with a damp cloth and leave to rise until double it's bulk (approx 1 hour)
11. divide dough into 3 equal parts
12. roll each of the parts into strips approx 12 to 15 inches long
13. braid the three strips together
14. place on floured baking sheet
15. cover lightly and leave to rise till double it's bulk (1/2 to 1 hour)
16. heat oven to 375F, 190C, gas 5
16. brush with the remainder of the egg
17 sprinkle with seeds and put in the oven for approx 40 mins, or until golden brown
18 remove from oven place on a cooling tray leave to cool before eating
