8 oz stoned dates
¼ pt water
1 tsp vanila essence
4 oz S R flour
1 level tsp bicarb of soda
4 oz quick oats
6 oz caster sugar
4 oz butter (or marge)


1. pre heat oven to gas mark 4
2. grease a 7" x 11" baking tray
3. chop dates
4. put dates and water in pan over high heat till boils
5. reduce heat to simmer and cook dates until soft
6. add essence
7. sift flour into mixing bowl
8. rub in fat
9. stir in bicarb, oats and sugar
10 put ½ mixture into tray and press down
11 cover with date mixture
12 top with rest of crumb mix and press down
13 put into the oven and bake for 20-30 mins
14 when cool dredge with icing sugar and cut into squares
